Losing Weight Safely
You know, it really makes me laugh that the best credentials the “latest” in weight loss pills has to offer is “as seen on the Oprah Winfrey show.” Really, I respect Oprah as much as anyone else. She’s a smart lady and has done so much good for the world, but the woman is NOT a doctor, and let’s face it, she’s yo-yoed over the years with fad diets just like the rest of us.
Countless studies have told us that our country is facing an obesity epidemic of massive proportions (sorry for the bad pun) which is easy enough to see without all the research to document it. Of course we all want to lose a few (or fifty) extra pounds, and because of our soft lifestyle, we want to do it without any effort on our part. Weight loss pills have been the magic solution for obesity problems for decades. The only problem is, they usually either don’t work, or are accompanied by hazardous side effects including addiction and heart damage.
When I was about fourteen I was desperate to lose fifteen pounds, convinced it would make me instantly popular, confidant, and attractive. I sneakily bought a bottle of expensive, caffeine filled, appetite suppressing weight loss pills (my mother would have freaked if she had known) and proceeded to medicate myself with who knows what.
The weight loss pills were supposed to boost my energy as well as kill my appetite, but they did the opposite. I was drained of energy. I would crash on my bed every day after school and sleep for a couple of hours and be groggy when I woke up. The only thing they boosted was my heart rate, which I could feel literally racing as I lay in bed. Luckily I stopped taking the weight loss pills before they did any permanent damage. I lost the weight the hard way, through exercise and healthy eating.
If weight loss pills sound really good to you to help kick that spare tire, talk to your doctor, don’t just go with whatever fad Oprah decides to endorse. Smarter people have been fooled before.
