Improving Adolescent Literacy in Homes and Schools

Reading is a skill that opens the door to cognitive, social and economical development. It can also be a continuing source of entertainment. Unfortunately, millions of children across the country struggle with the ability to read. Some of these struggles stem from learning disabilities, but others are simply the result of limited or poor teaching. Whatever the cause, adolescent literacy is lower than it should be though. And, without the proper attention, reading disabilities will continue to hinder a child’s progress through elementary school, middle school, high school and beyond.

For teachers who are trying to combat this challenge in their classroom and school, Scholastic has introduced a new tool called Read 180. By using interactive technology and material that the students actually enjoy reading, this program can combat literacy challenges at any age and any grade level. Teachers aren’t the only ones who can use this life-changing tool though.

Even though it may take personal time and energy, parents can help their children use Read 180 as well. Give your children and students the tools they need to succeed by teaching them the value of reading. It is a skill they will use and rely on their entire life.
