With Our New Home Came the Desire for Storage

Posted on April 29th, 2011 in Logistics by NewsCrawler

We recently moved into a new home, and have a lot of things still in boxes.  We’ve been married about twelve years, we have five children, and we have lived in a small home for most of that time.  One of the indications that we really needed to find a new home was when we no longer had any clear surfaces to keep all of the things we had accumulated over the years.  That, and the fact that we only had two bedrooms for the seven of us.  That worked for the kids when they were little, but now that they were growing up, our older children needed their own rooms.  We did some hunting and found an amazing home that suits all of our needs.  We should be here for many years to come.

We have more than enough room for everything here, but with everything still in boxes, we realized that rather than unpack it all, we would like to keep it at a self storage facility and fill our new home with newer things.  We still want to keep those things, and so for the time being, throwing them away is out of the question.  After we got everything moved from one house to the other, we pulled all of the boxes we wanted in self storage in Milton into the garage and then began loading them into the back of our truck and moving them to the storage facility.  We took our time and went through the boxes a bit to make sure there wasn’t anything we had an immediate need for before we sent them away, and then made sure we organized them in the storage unit so we could access any of them with very little difficulty.

I have had to make a few trips to the unit to get some books, and some of my wife’s tools got sent there by mistake, but we were able to grab those things very easily.  Our self storage facility has high security and climate controls, so we can rest assured that our things are both safe and sound.  As such, we have started the very fun and somewhat expensive task of filling our new home with new things.  I expect that in the coming years, some of these things will end up in self storage as well, and if they do, we know right where to keep them.

How to Choose a College for ADHD Students

Posted on April 29th, 2011 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

Our culture has become more understanding of learning disabilities such as ADHD, and as a result more colleges are offering services to accommodate students who need the extra assistance. The trick is finding the right college that will help you make it through your educational career and come out successful.

One of the biggest concerns about college for ADHD students is the lack of structure. In the college world, you have to plan your own time and keep yourself on the right track. If this is a thought that has entered your mind and made you unsure about your education, you should know there is help available. Be proud of the fact you will have already beaten the odds just by stepping foot into your first college class.

Research has shown that only 22 percent of high school students living with ADHD go on to attend college.  A lot of students are afraid of how they will do in a college setting, but you don’t have to be. There are specific colleges for ADHD students. They are accredited and provide a quality education. Just as importantly, they provide the right teaching strategy for students with a learning disability. ADHD impacts the portion of the brain responsible for executive functioning making it difficult to perform in the following areas:

  • Attention
  •  Planning and Organization
  • Prioritization
  •  Impulse Control
  •  Memory
  • Time Management
  • Higher-order Conceptual Thinking

There are schools that address these specific issues while they teach in their classrooms. Although there are many colleges that provide services for learning disabilities, there are only a few that cater to them specifically. Out of those there is only one college for ADHD students that offers BA and AA degrees specifically for people with learning disabilities.

Every student should do a lot of research before deciding on any one college. If you are a student or a parent of a student with a learning disability, you have one more thing to look for in a school. You need to look into the type of services they offer to assist those with learning disabilities. Most colleges should have a support center you can contact. They may be referred to by different names at different colleges. You may need to look for Office of Student Disability Services, Disability Support, Office of Disabled Student Services, Learning Support Services, or any title that resembles these names.

Eyeglasses Offer a New Vision For the Future

Posted on April 28th, 2011 in Medical Information Resources by NewsCrawler

People could need eyeglasses from Edmonton at nearly every age.  Some young children need them early in their lives to be able to learn to read and should be checked way before starting school.  The right correction is needed and so it is wise to find a really good optometrist or ophthalmologist to administer tests and then write a subscription for the proper script for the glasses needed by anyone at any age.

It is also important to pick the proper frame to match each person’s face to help them look their best.  The right eye wear can add a lot to the person’s style.  Some children have problems with a weak eye muscle and the right glasses can help to correct the problem so, as an adult, it is no longer a problem.  It is essential for these children to follow the eye doctor’s instructions to a tee and attend the needed follow up appointments for the glasses to be changed and new eye exercises to be explained and given.

As we all age, even the lucky ones of us who have never needed glasses find that we now need something for small print, and need to be tested for the strength of the glasses we might need to read.  There are some glasses that can be bought over the counter at some stores with a certain amount of magnification and those work for some but not all people.  It could be that each eye is changing at a different rate, and with the tests and new glasses, it is easier to read even the smallest print.

Because eyes can change at every age, yearly examinations may be needed to make sure they are still doing okay.  Even if there has not been a change, it is best to know that your glasses or contact lenses are the right script. If you can see to read, you can figure out anything you need to do in life.  You can travel the world through books, learn many new things, read about the history of your family’s past, and even learn math.  And if you take good care of your eyes, and use the proper darker lenses when you are out in the sun, you may not need to have cataract surgery, but the same eye doctor can tell you if you do need the surgery and then write the proper script for the new glasses you might need after the surgery that are not nearly as strong.  You may even be able to see an Edmonton Oiler game more clearly!

Protecting Cargo in the Back of Small Trucks

Posted on April 28th, 2011 in Things to Buy by NewsCrawler

Tonneau covers are covers installed for use in protecting cargo in the back of pickup trucks.  They come in all sizes to fit various truck beds.  The soft ones usually roll up when not in use, but can be kept in place to keep the truck bed clean.  Some open like doors and are made of hard but durable plastic. Some tilt, some fold, and some roll up.

Most pickup trucks now are used as personal vehicles, not as an extra along with a family sedan or station wagon as in the past. Because of that, tonneau covers from Calgary take the place of a locking trunk along with a way to cover firewood or other cargo.  And because of that, they should be a pretty accessory and add to the looks of the truck.  Many are so well made they will outlast the life of the truck.  It is best to get some expert advice when purchasing a tonneau cover in Calgary so that it will fit snugly enough to not cause wind drag when driving down the highway, especially with the cost of gas today.  Not only will an ill fitting one look bad, but it could cost a great deal of money over time.

Most tonneau covers from Calgary have strategically placed weather seals which effectively channel water away from your cargo.  Many use arched support pieces to help with moisture runoff.  You can have them painted to match your truck or to make a statement with a different color if that is your desire.  Some have even been painted with a scene on them.  Tonneau covers come in a variety of prices and it is best if you get some expert advice about what is best for your truck and the use of the cover.

For instance, one that would be used in Calgary might be completely different in both cost and construction than one used in Orlando.  Do a Google search and find someone in your specific area and go there in person to see what they might offer.  Or if you already know what you want, there are sites where you can shop on line and have one installed locally once it is delivered.  Just take some care to find a reputable dealer with a good track record.  The cover, if it is the right one, will enhance the use of your truck for its whole lifetime.

Keys Are Easier to Replace Than People Think

Posted on April 28th, 2011 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

People and the things that are of value to them need to be protected and safeguarded. The most prized possession a person can have is their family. Nobody can place a high enough price tag on a loved one. For many people the only way to feel truly safe and secure is to have a good security system in place. A high tech alarm system does not do any good without the locks to accompany them. Locks and locksmiths also go hand in hand.

Toronto locksmiths are a good place to start when looking for an experienced locksmith. Some of the locksmith companies today also provide architectural products needed in security systems and are also trained in understanding the architectural designs of building and homes.  Schools of security technology are a modern word for a school that teaches locksmithing. Changing a lock of today is a lot different than it used to be thirty and forty years ago. Replacing a lock has also evolved into a higher technology. People from around the globe are more concerned with security than ever before. Crime in many parts of the world has gone up and people are replacing what used to be a decent security system made of deadbolts and chain locks, with better alarms and more up-to-date security systems.

Schooling to become a locksmith has been made fairly simple to accomplish. Basic locksmithing is a course that involves learning about basic locking and unlocking principles relating to the pin tumbler cylinder. For the student taking this course in basic locksmithing, they will learn how to disassemble and reassemble standard mortise and rim cylinders using the tools of the trade. Making keys and learning how to rekey is also in the basics that will be learned. Pinning kits, code machines, and opening techniques are all a part of the basics in learning locksmithing.  Another kind of class that can be taken through a locksmith school is a class in safe locking. Students will learn about the basic safe lock components and the functions of safe locks. Students will learn the classifications, safe labels, and also about the construction of safes. Learning about combination changing procedures for hand changing and key changing is also covered in this type of class. Digital types of safes with all the programming needed, are included as well. Electronic security is the preferred choice of security with most companies and the classes that are offered in this particular field teaches students how to lock and unlock doors with the use of remotes or electrically. Today’s security system incorporates electronic security hardware found in a low-voltage course. Basic programming and how to use a volt meter are parts of this course.

Gutters Difficult to Clean on the Outside of Homes

Posted on April 26th, 2011 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

Now that spring is finally here, many people are working on their yards.  All the debris from winter is being cleaned up and carted off.  Bushes need pruning before they sprout and flowers are being planted.  People with enough room for a vegetable garden are busy mulching and getting the soil ready for the seeds they will plant as soon as the ground is warm enough to allow them to germinate.  But many people tend to overlook the cleaning of their gutters.  This is especially important because clogged gutters can lead to damaged paint and siding and even, over time, cause problems with a foundation if the water from spring and summer rain is not properly carried away from the house.

Even a roof can be damaged by water that has been dammed by leaves and other debris.  Some people have gutter covers that do allow rain into the gutters without leaves and other debris collecting, but even then, small amounts of shattered leaves or just dirt from the roof can collect.  That is why it really is best to have someone with expertise and the right equipment come and clean gutters as soon as possible in the spring.  That way, you do not have to be the one getting on your roof and maybe even causing damage. If they use the right extraction equipment used, and take the debris to friendly neighborhood mulch recycle locations, then your yard will be left clean as well.

Some of these gutter cleaners in Vancouver also do power washing of siding and wash windows at the same time.  It is quicker and easier for the homeowner to hire someone for all this work, and once it is done, the whole lot and house look very nice and ready for summer parties.  All of this can be done in one day.

Companies that have these services can be found online, and there are usually recommendations provided from people who have used the services before.  It is also recommended to check with friends or neighbors about who may have used a service in the past and they were satisfied with the results.  Most companies in the Vancouver area as well as other areas use materials that are considered to be green and good for the environment.  It is just nice to have it all done as soon as possible to be ready for whatever is going to be done in the yard or on a patio during the summer.

Fine Furniture for a Beautiful New Home

Posted on April 26th, 2011 in Things to Buy by NewsCrawler

Last month, my family moved into a beautiful new home.  When we were first married, we lived in a nice apartment, and then we bought and moved into a small, modest first home.  When we moved in, we had one child, and when we left, we had four.  It was only a two bedroom, one bathroom house, so the six of us made it very cramped.  We saved our money, consulted with real estate agents, and at long last found a house to keep our family safe and sound.  The neighborhood is excellent and the schools are the best in the state.  There are a lot of small parks and a massive fairground.  It is literally everything we have always hoped for.

The change in size means that while we have loads of space, we do not have a lot of furniture to fill it yet.  That’s not a bad problem to have, and my wife has done a lot of window shopping and searching online for the things she would like to have in our home.  It has been a lot of fun, and being thrifty, I know that I don’t have to worry about her recommending anything that will leave us swamped in debt.  She also has good taste, and so I know that even if the furniture in each room is vastly different, it will all match the same theme and style, and one room will seem to flow naturally into the next.

Slowly but surely, we have been stocking every room with the right furniture from a Denver furniture store.  Our goal was to have the dining room decked out first, because as an extension of the kitchen, it is the most important room in the house.  We can sit on the floor in every other room, but the dining room table is the place where we gather daily to share our meals and reconnect.  When guests come, we always have extra places set to make sure they walk into the home feeling welcome, and leave well-fed.  We have a nice wooden table and chair set and are happy with what we have created.

The living room was next, and now we have a nice ensemble in that room to keep our family and guests comfortable.  The children also have beds, although we will have to get a new one for our oldest son, who has outgrown the bed he has slept in for several years.  The whole process has been fun and educational, and everyone in the family now has a new sense of ownership in our new home.

Self-Storage is a Way to Free Up Some Space

Posted on April 26th, 2011 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

After our recent move to a new home, our garage and basement are full of boxes filled with things we do not currently need.  We will most likely need them in the future, but not right now, and definitely not every day.  They are fine where they are for now, but once we get some things planned out, we want to make better use of that space.  I want to finish one of the rooms downstairs into an extra family room, but for now, it is a storage space.

We have started looking at different Calgary self storage places here in the area.  We want to find one that is both safe and easily accessible.  When I say safe, I do not just mean safe for my stuff.  I want the place to be a safe place for me or any member of my family to visit when we need to either retrieve something or store something away.  I do not want to have to worry about it being too dark or unsupervised when we visit.

We also want a place with climate control.  Some of the things that want to store are delicate, and extremes in temperature might damage them.  Not only that, but I would hate to find out after it is too late that my storage space was flooded with rainwater or had snow blown in under the door.  Getting too hot could be equally detrimental, so we want to find a secure self-storage location.

In looking, I found a place located close to a home, so there was no way to get a moving truck or vehicle anywhere near the storage units.  The place seemed largely unattended, so there was no way to check out moving dollies or hand carts.  I am not really big into carrying heavy boxes for long distances, so I want someplace with loading docks and in-store handcarts to help me move my stuff.

We care about the things that we own, and even though we may not need it all right now, I want to be sure that wherever it is kept will be safe, sound, and available whenever we might need to go get it.  I also want to make sure we are safe and sound when we need to go get things.

Ford Cars Are My Car of Choice

Posted on April 25th, 2011 in Things to Buy by NewsCrawler

Ford is my all-time favorite car company.  Their name is credible, their cars are exceptional, and I really like the fact that they are assembled here in the United States, which means that owning a Ford car helps keep jobs and money in the United States.  I really cannot say enough about how much I like this company.

My two favorite Ford cars are the Fiesta and the Taurus, for almost purely emotional reasons.  The first time I drove a Taurus was over a decade ago.  My grandmother, who I considered my morning and evening star, had just died, and my car was in the shop for repairs.  In a pinch, I went to a car rental place and was willing to take whatever they had.  The best one for the money was a Taurus, which I ended up keeping for about ten days.  There was just something comforting about the reliability of the car as I was dealing with all of the emotions of losing someone so important to me.  The ride was comfortable for both long and short drives, and I found myself not wanting to give the car back.  In the end, we did part, but I put on my list to own a Taurus someday.

Several years later, I was in the market for a used car in McAllen. One of my friends is a mechanic, so I asked for his advice and help in picking out a new car.  I really wanted a Taurus, but unfortunately, no one had been willing to part with theirs, so there wasn’t one available on the local used car market.  Instead, we found a gorgeous red Fiesta.  The mileage was good and the Blue Book price was a match up.  We took it out for a test drive, and it had the same feel I had experienced with the Taurus.  We haggled with the Ford dealer a little bit, and when all was said and done, I took the car off the lot and drove it over to my girlfriend’s parent’s house to show it off.

So, given the choice, our next car will be a Ford.  And so will the next one and the one after that, and eventually one of them will be a Taurus.  Until then, I, my family, and my wallet are happy to be riding in wonderful Ford vehicles.

Accountants Gained Me Thousands of Dollars

Posted on April 25th, 2011 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

When my wife and I first got married, we looked at what other people were doing in order to keep from reinventing the wheel.  As far as finding a place to live, we checked with some of our friends to find a good apartment complex and chose one from the places they recommended.  For shopping, we checked with her thrifty aunt, who knew where every good deal in town could be found.  As far as a new car, I talked to my friend who worked as a mechanic for a car dealership, and with his inside information, we were able to find a great deal on an excellent and slightly used car.  We did this with everything and because of it, we saved a lot of time, money, and we were able to get our lives on the move in no time at all.

When it came tax time, I looked around.  My brother-in-law did his own taxes and swore that if we had the right software package, we would get a decent return and never have to pay an accountant.  He said his taxes only took him a few days a year to process, and not only did he get a couple hundred dollars in return, he had the satisfaction of knowing he did it himself.  For some reason, that did not sound like the best option, so I checked with an accountant in Barrie to see what the difference would be.  He offered to look at my taxes and let me know what I could expect, all while I waited at his desk.

He punched in the numbers, looked at what we were claiming, which was identical to what my brother-in-law was claiming, and made some recommendations.  For starters, we were only claiming about half of the exemptions that we were eligible for.  When he finished all of the number crunching, we were due back over five thousand dollars!  That was more than ten times what my brother-in-law was going to get, and the fee of the accountant seemed like nothing compared to what we would be getting in return.  I gladly paid the accountant, he printed up our papers, and we were filed.  When I told my brother-in-law about what had happened, he actually seemed offended, but my sister-in-law stepped in and made sure, from that point on, they used an accountant.
