The Value of Auto Mechanics Class

Posted on September 30th, 2009 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

Although I had no plans to do any tinkering with cars or machinery in my future career, I thought it a good idea to take the auto mechanics course offered at my high school. I actually learned quite a lot. We studied how the engine runs, how transmissions work, and many other parts of the car. We even looked at a little bit of the history of cars and how technology has evolved over the years. We are so dependent on them today that it is hard to imagine what life was like without them.

We then learned basic maintenance starting with the proper use of a car jack, and an emphasis on safety. We learned how to put a new tire on the rim, and then balance it. We learned how to replace the brakes, and turn the rotors. In addition to learning how replace the oil and oil filter, we learned the difference between regular motor oil, and amsoil synthetic motor oils. We learned how to adjust or replace the timing belt, and perform all types of diagnostics. It got to the point where we were pretty good at analyzing a car that had problems and diagnosing what needed to be done.

I have owned several cars since then and have greatly appreciated all I learned in auto mechanics. Even if it meant understanding what the technician working on my car was talking about so I could prevent him pulling the wool over my eyes. Auto mechanics is a must take class for anyone.

A Few Cold Weather Tips For New Mail Carriers

Posted on September 30th, 2009 in Things to Buy by NewsCrawler

If you are a new mail carrier for the US Postal service and have a regular delivery route, you’re no doubt already well acquainted with the idiosyncrasies of the neighborhoods you service, the ins and outs of postal uniforms, and the names of most of the area’s dogs! But with autumn coming on and its accompanying cooler temperatures, it seems that a few tips for handling cold weather are in order.

– Wear layers: Postal uniforms codes are strict, but they do not prohibit how much a carrier can wear underneath on freezing cold days! Stick with your approved sweaters and windbreakers on top, but do not hesitate to wear long underwear and other layers underneath! Layering means that you can take off or add a few items of clothing in your truck depending on the changes in temperature.

– Wear wool socks: It is very difficult to keep the rest of your body warm once your feet get cold and damp. Wool not only repels outside water naturally, it also keeps feet well insulated against freezing temperatures.

– Wear a hat: Statistics show that a good 30% of body heat can be lost through the head if a hat is not being worn. There are several tricks to retain heat by wearing a hat: the first is to put it on BEFORE you get cold. You also need to wear a warm hat that “breathes” well in order to prevent cold sweatiness. Make sure the hat also covers your ears since their delicate tissues and physical exposure make them particularly prone to frostbite.

Being able to work outdoors is a great blessing, but in order to stay healthy and on the job, mail carriers have to take the precautions necessary to stay warm!

5 Reasons to Use Stainless Steel in the Kitchen

Posted on September 30th, 2009 in Things to Buy by NewsCrawler

With the downturn in the economy, many folks are choosing to stay put in their existing homes and remodeling what they’ve got. If you are tired of looking at those dreary old-fashioned Formica or plastic laminate countertops as well as your rust-stained porcelain kitchen sink, maybe it’s time for a change. Here are 5 reasons to make stainless steel a part of your kitchen remodeling strategy.

1. It looks clean and sleek

Is there anything more modern looking than a stainless steel sheet stretching across your kitchen countertops? Probably not. And don’t be intimidated by the medium if you plan on doing the remodeling yourself. With the right tools and a little education, even do-it-yourselfers can learn how to cut a stainless steel sheet like a pro and give the room an updated look.

2. It reflects light

Even the darkest kitchen will look lighter thanks to the reflective qualities of stainless steel. Not only will it reflect natural as well as artificial light, it will also bring out the color of your walls and your overall decorating scheme. Stainless steel is, after all, gloriously neutral in color.

3. No fuss cooking

If you still have Formica tops, they are probably covered in burn marks. Even expensive new counter surfaces such as granite are susceptible to heat damage from hot pots. Not so with stainless steel. You can put hot pans directly on the surface and it will never, ever be damaged from the heat.

4. Easy clean up

There’s a reason why stainless steel is the number one choice for restaurant kitchens: it cleans up and sanitizes like nothing else. There is zero chance of harboring harmful bacteria in cut marks and, of course, stainless steel is – well – stainless! The counters can also be safely bleached for extra good hygiene.

5. It lasts

With good care, a stainless steel countertop and sink will last a long, long time. Make sure to back up your countertops with a solid material such as plywood to keep the counters from making a hollow “bonging” sound.

Wedding Traditions: Fine China

Posted on September 25th, 2009 in Things to Buy by NewsCrawler

Getting married is a time of joy and excitement as well as a time of traditions. From the clothes we wear, to the food we serve, the cake, the rings, the ceremony, weddings are based on the traditions passed on from our ancestors. One common tradition for new brides that has been a tradition for many years is to be given a set of fine china or porcelain dishes that can be used throughout the rest of the marriage.

A fine set of dishes was a symbol of prosperity and has been for hundred of years. When porcelain was first imported to Europe in the 17th century from China, it was a mystery to Europeans. It took many years of experimentation before Europeans discovered the art of making true porcelain. It happened in 1708 when two German scientists discovered the correct materials and processes for making true porcelain. Despite their discovery, it took other European nations a few years before discovering their own processes. France and England were two of the leaders.

England especially has a long history of fine porcelain making. After much experimentation with different methods, porcelain factories began to spring up all around England. The invention of adding bone ash to the mixture was an entirely English invention and bone china is still being made today by famous English factories. A few of these factories are responsible for the fine china that a bride might hope to be gifted on her wedding day. The Royal Doulton company is one company with roots in the 19th century that is still creating fine china today. Their Royal Doulton collection is revered all over the world. A gift of fine china such is would be a joy to any bride.

Sexual Harassment in the Lone Star State: Do You Have a Case?

Posted on September 25th, 2009 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

If you are a Texas resident who thinks you are experiencing gender discrimination at work, you don’t have to sit there and take it. You may be protected under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act as well as the Texas Commission on Human Rights Act (TCHRA). You need to contact Rosenberg & Sprovach Law whose offices specialize in cases that should be handled by a good

Texas employment attorney

.
One of the most insidious forms of gender discrimination is sexual harassment. Here are some of the ways harassment may be manifested:

– One form of harassment is the “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” approach: a supervisor, manager or someone else in a position of authority will encourage a subservient employee to perform an act (usually of a sexual nature) in return for favoritism or advancement at work. The flip side to this form of harassment is if the supervisor withholds a promotion or plum work assignment from an employee who rebuffs his advances. Both of these types of harassment are, of course, illegal. If this has happened to you, you should contact a Texas employment attorney at Rosenberg & Sprovach immediately.

– Another form of harassment is one in which a hostile work environment is created because of a highly charged sexual atmosphere. This harassment can take the form of crude jokes, sexual innuendos, overt and covert inappropriate physical contact, and even the display of sexual materials. Although every workplace tends to have isolated single events of a sexual nature here and there, it becomes harassment when the problem is chronic or if it an isolated single event that is really egregious. This type of harassment can be caused by a boss, but it can equally come from coworkers or even customers. If you are at the end of your rope due to circumstances such as those just described, contact a lawyer right away.

You absolutely do not have to subject yourself day after day and month after month to the physical and/or emotional pains of sexual harassment. Get help now.

Purchasing the Toys versus Renting the Toys

Posted on September 24th, 2009 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

Maybe I think differently than most, but when you think logically about it, renting to me seems the much better choice. I have not always thought like this though, because the normal way of thinking is that owning is better. Here is an example: My grandparents had a cabin. It is not longer in the family every since my grandfather passed away, but man we created some memories up there. It was a gorgeous area, backed up to the reservoir with their own private boat ramp and dock. The cabin was large enough to fit several families at a time. I set a goal for myself that I wanted to get a similar cabin to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather. If I were to purchase that cabin, I’d be looking at $6000 per month house payment. Now, if I were to live there 365 days out of the year, this would be the only option, but if this is just a vacation home, I had to think about how often I would really use it. I had to admit that probably only about 6 weeks out of the year.

I then did research on renting a cabin, fully equipped with all the toys and everything, and learned that you can rent a paradise like this for about $1500 per week. Real quick you will notice that they price is about the same, but you don’t have to pay for all the time you are not there. The same principle goes for Arizona boat rentals. You only pay for the time you use them, instead of making payments on a depreciating asset.

Saving Energy in Our Homes

Posted on September 23rd, 2009 in Tips and Tricks by NewsCrawler

With all the debate recently about the importance of finding sustainable energy to replace our enormous global use of fossil fuels, I have become more and more interested in ways to cut energy costs and find ways to save energy in my own home. There are several ways to accomplish this. Some are more involved and costly and others are simple every-day habits that we can change.

One easy change that we can make is updating outdated and inefficient light bulbs. Even though it may not seem like a big deal, the accumulated energy savings are quite significant. Regular incandescent light bulbs in your home used up to 25% of the average home energy budget and the cost of the electricity used is about 5 to 10 times more expensive than the cost of the bulb itself. Compact Fluorescent Lights or CFL bulbs are four times more efficient than a regular bulb and use 50-80% less energy than an incandescent bulb.

Another way to cut energy costs is to eliminate the use of a clothes dryer. If possible, drying your clothes outside on a clothesline can save you money and energy. Your clothes dryer is the second biggest energy-using appliance in the home next to the refrigerator. However, if eliminating the use of a dryer is just not possible, buying an energy efficient dryer is the next best thing. Many utility companies even offer rebates when you buy an energy efficient dryer.

One of the best ways to increase energy efficiency in the home is to have solar panels installed. Though in years past, installing solar panels could be costly and difficult, things have changed. Most states have government incentives for people who wish to install solar panels. Solar costs aren’t what they used to be. And with growth in technology installation isn’t as complicated as it once was. Saving energy in our homes is essential and we can do it in simple ways.

Language Skills Spread The Word

Posted on September 22nd, 2009 in Things to Buy by NewsCrawler

NuSkin Enterprises generates one billion dollars a year in sales through its network of affiliate independent contractors that are spread out across the globe. The health and nutrition company was founded in 1984 in Provo, Utah and has grown over the years to become a leader in the nutritional healthcare market. With holdings in Asia and the United States NuSkin Enterprises has taken the world by storm and is among the top producing companies for nutritional supplements.

As the world continues to get smaller NuSkin continues to get bigger. Originally the network marketing company hired independent contractors that were in their college years and had returned from spending time both in the United States and internationally. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah were recruited for their language skills and connections to the international population after returning from a two year mission for the church. These pioneers of network marketing flocked to NuSkin because of the opportunity to continue to use the language skills acquired by serving a two year mission and because the company allowed flexible schedules and higher pay for the students than they could make flipping burgers or working in the library while they were in college.

The network marketing abilities of NuSkin Enterprises have been on an upward surge ever since and today more than 760,000 independent contractors work for the company in 48 different international markets. What is remarkable is that the Asian Pacific rim contributes more sales volume than the United States, which is a virtually untapped market for the NuSkin team of global network marketers.
