Pros and Cons of Dieting Plans

Dieting can be very difficult for many “lifelong dieters”. How many people do you know that have tried and failed, tried and failed to find the right diet plan that helps them lose weight and keep it off. I have found a couple of plans that work, but many, many more that haven’t worked. Here are a few personally observations of plans that I have tried, as well as the pros and cons that I have found.

Diet Pills

Diet pills are perhaps the most trendy of all diet plans – though they may also be the most dangerous. Because they often (either directly or indirectly) offer a “miracle cure”, they have gained enormous popularity and almost always offer more than they can deliver. There are also some potentially severe side effects for some diet pills, as well as the risk of dependence.

Diet pills can work by providing appetite suppression, boosting metabolism, and providing energy, but there are also potentially some very serious side effects. Therefore, they should never be used as a substitute for proper diet and exercise. So be careful.

Portion Control

Portion control is the most difficult form of dieting, but is also the most effecting, long term. Additionally, it is the safest and most healthy form of dieting. Portion control, quite simply, is learning to make healthier decisions about what and how much you eat. Lowering your calories, fat, sugar and other unhealthy foods as well as lowering your portions of the foods that you do eat can make all the differences in losing weight and, more importantly, changing your lifestyle to keep the weight off.

Diet Programs

Dieting programs can also be very effective, and they are usually much easier than self-regulated portion control, because the dieting programs are preplanned for you and all you have to do is follow the plan and eat what you are told to eat.

The biggest downside is the cost associated with these plans. Nutrasystem and Jenny Craig are quite popular and very effective, but either of them will run you 300-500 dollars a month for the food. Additionally, the food selection is limited, so you might get tired of eating the same sorts of things every day – especially if you’re a picky eater.

No matter which diet you choose, you should always use care in making sure that you get the nutrients that you need. Consult a physician before attempting any overly-ambitions dieting plans and check your weight about once a week, to avoid frustration from water-weight and normal daily fluxuations in your weight.
